A Resolution Recognizing Phil and Dot Ponder on their 90th Birthdays.

WHEREAS, cities are blessed by residents who invest their time, talent, and treasure in the communities where they live; and

 

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council, representing the citizens of Davidson County, recognizes the contributions of Hermitage power couple, Phil and Dot Ponder, longtime residents who are each celebrating their 90th birthdays this year; and

 

WHEREAS, Dorothy "Dot" Myrle Connell was born on February 20, 1933, in Fort Myers, Florida and Philip "Phil" Chazal Ponder born April 6, 1933, in Ocala, Florida; and

 

WHEREAS, Dot was born during the presidency of Herbert Hoover and Phil was born during the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt; and

 

WHEREAS, they met in Ocala around the age of 9; and

 

WHEREAS, their first date was during senior year at Ocala High School, where they were both in the Class of 1951; and

 

WHEREAS, after graduating from University of Florida, Phil served as a Navy officer and Dot worked as a secretary; and

 

WHEREAS, after getting married on June 7, 1956, and honeymooning in Daytona Beach, Phil reported to Yorktown, Virginia; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1959 when Phil went to work for Genesco, they moved to Donelson with the first two of their four children.  In 1969 they relocated the long distance to Hermitage, TN; and

 

WHEREAS, Phil and Dot were active in the community with three daughters and one son.  Dot was a Sunday school teacher, Girl Scout leader and coach for basketball and softball. Phil was involved in church, civic and community affairs; and

 

WHEREAS, they started Phil Ponder Prints in 1979; and

 

WHEREAS, after 30 years at Genesco, Phil retired in 1989. He completed his second term as a Metro Council member in 2003 and was a Community Liaison for 10 years on the staff of U.S. Congressman Jim Cooper; and

 

WHEREAS, Dot is "Mammie" and Phil is "Paw Paw" to eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild that is on the way; and

 

WHEREAS, it is most fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council wish Phil and Dot Ponder a Happy Birthday and celebrate their combined 180 years of contributions and service to Metro Nashville.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

 

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as honoring and recognizing Phil and Dot Ponder on their 90th birthdays and wish them many more years of health, prosperity, and happiness.

 

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this resolution to be presented to Mr. and Mrs. Ponder.

 

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
