A resolution honoring the life of former Councilman Ray Carl Burch.

WHEREAS, Ray Carl Burch passed away on August 10, 2022; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Burch graduated from Ezell-Harding Christian School in Antioch. He later attended Lipscomb University and graduated from Vanderbilt University; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Burch was an engineer and was a long-standing member of the National Association of Elevator Contractors. He invented a microprocessor for elevators - the first artificial intelligence for elevators - to make them more efficient; and

 

WHEREAS, a brilliant engineer who could fix almost anything, he earned the nickname “McGyver” from his peers. However, his true talent was teaching others what he knew so they could learn to fix and problem solve as well; and

 

WHEREAS, inspired by his father-in-law who had previously served on the Council, he was elected to the Metropolitan Council in 2003 representing Council District 13; and

 

WHEREAS, he was reelected in 2007, serving two terms on the Metropolitan Council and representing District 13 with distinction and was voted “best hair” on the Council; and

 

WHEREAS, he lived in the same zipcode all his life and was an active member of the Vultee Church of Christ and Woodmont Hills Church of Christ; and

 

WHEREAS, he was also a fan of American-made cars, classic country music like George Jones, and was a sports fanatic who played football and basketball before coaching his children and nieces and nephews; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Burch is survived by his wife, Kim Burch, four children, and one grandchild; and

 

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council honor the life of former Councilman Carl Burch and recognize his years of dedicated service to District 13 and the residents of Nashville.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

 

Section 1. That the Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as honoring the life of former Councilman Ray Carl Burch.

 

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
