A Resolution recognizing the 50th anniversary of the Exit/In.

WHEREAS, this year marks the 50th anniversary of one of Nashville's oldest rock clubs the Exit/In, which has been an integral part of the city's music history; and
WHEREAS, opened in 1971 by Owsley Manier and Brugh Reynolds, the listening-room style music venue was named the Exit/In for its main rear entrance; and
WHEREAS, the Exit/In is located on Elliston Place, one of Nashville's oldest streets and the city's counterculture epicenter, near Vanderbilt University. It is a cornerstone of "The Rock Block", which has housed other iconic locations like The End and Gold Rush, which closed in 2019; and
WHEREAS, the legendary venue has hosted many famous musicians and groups, many before they became famous, including Jimmy Buffet, Etta James, Linda Ronstadt, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, R.E.M., Talking Heads, The Police, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Keith Urban, to list only a few; and
WHEREAS, Robert Altman filmed a pivotal scene in the 1975 film Nashville at the venue; and
WHEREAS, in the 1980s, the venue also hosted Music City's first "in the round" singer/songwriter performance during the filming of the television program Nashville Skyline. Guy Clark, Rodney Crowell, and Vince Gill were one of the many trios that performed for the series; and
WHEREAS, after a host of acts and owners, Chris Cobb became the sole owner of the venue in 2019, after being a partial owner for seven years; and
WHEREAS, preservation efforts have been underway to help uphold and maintain the area's history, including the 2020 installation of a Metro Historical Commission historical marker on Elliston Place honoring the Rock Block; and
WHEREAS, the Exit/In holds a special place in the history of Music City. It is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan County Council honors and celebrates 50 years of the Exit/In in Nashville.
