A resolution celebrating and commemorating the 50th anniversary of the passage of Title IX.

WHEREAS, Title IX of Public Law 92-318, the sex discrimination law best known for giving girls and women equal access to federally funded school sports programs, celebrates its 50th anniversary on June 23, 2022; and
WHEREAS, the numbers of girls playing high school sports has multiplied at least tenfold since 1972. Women today account for nearly half of all college athletes, and there are more opportunities for young women to have a professional sports career; and
WHEREAS, the Nashville Sports Council along with the city's colleges and universities, are celebrating this upcoming 50th anniversary with a focus on featuring female athletes at their events; and
WHEREAS, the Sports Authority's facility partners are also celebrating this anniversary and sponsoring events featuring female athletes; and
WHEREAS, since November 2019, the Sports Authority, with the assistance of its Women's Professional Sports Ad Hoc Committee and Advisory Committee on Women in Sports, has sought to attract and secure a women's professional sports team, maximize the use of existing facilities and promote professional and amateur women's sports in Nashville; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council, in collaboration with the Council's Women's Caucus, hereby declares its intention to participate in the year-long city-wide celebration to commemorate Title IX and its impact on our city, and
WHEREAS, furthermore, the Metropolitan Council, in collaboration with the Council's Women's Caucus hereby encourages our community and city leaders to join the year-long city-wide celebration to commemorate Title IX and its impact on our city.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
