WHEREAS, Jonathan B. "Jon" Cooper joined the Metropolitan Council Office in 2001 as Assistant Director; and

WHEREAS, Jon joined the Council Office under Director Don Jones while studying at the Nashville School of Law; and

WHEREAS, Jon passed the bar in 2004 and continued as the Council's Assistant Director and attorney until 2008, when he became the Director and Special Counsel to the Metropolitan Council; and

WHEREAS, Jon served in that role for seven years until, in 2015, he was appointed as the Director of the Metropolitan Department of Law; and

WHEREAS, at the end of his four-year term at the Department of Law, Jon returned as the Director and Special Counsel to the Metro Council in 2019; and

WHEREAS, on July 1, 2021, Jon will leave the Metropolitan Government after 20 years of public service. He has been an institution - known for his thoughtful and considered advice, keen legal knowledge, great sense of humor, as well as his melodic roll call votes during the Metro Council meetings; and

WHEREAS, outside of Metro, Jon is known as a devoted family man to wife Jill and daughters Emily and Olivia, an accomplished musician specializing in the fiddle, and an avid outdoorsman who enjoys sailing and hiking; and

WHEREAS, Jon is a member of the Nashville Bar Association and served as the president of the Tennessee County Attorneys Association. He was a member of the inaugural Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative class of 2017-2018. The Nashville Business Journal awarded Jon the "Best of the Bar" award in 2018 and 2019; and

WHEREAS, while the Council will miss the leadership of Director Cooper, the Council expresses its deepest appreciation to him for his 20 years of service to the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County and wishes him well in his future endeavors.
