A resolution honoring the life and accomplishments of Kris Kristofferson.

WHEREAS, celebrated musician, songwriter, actor, and Country Music Hall of Fame member Kris Kristofferson died on September 28, 2024, at the age of eighty-eight; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Kristofferson, a native of Brownsville, Texas, came to Nashville in 1965 after his studies as a Rhodes Scholar and a stint in the United States Army; and
WHEREAS, the aspiring songwriter began crafting his lyrical style while working part-time jobs, including as a janitor at Columbia Records and as a helicopter pilot; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Kristofferson’s works, such as “Me and Bobby McGee”, “Help Me Make It Through the Night,” and “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down”, quickly became timeless classics; and
WHEREAS, he became a successful musician and artist in his own right, making his own hit records, performing as a member of supergroup The Highwayman and starring in several films, including the 1976 remake of “A Star is Born”; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Kristofferson was a fierce advocate for working songwriters and was a founding member of Nashville Songwriters Association International; and
WHEREAS, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1985 and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2004; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Kristofferson helped change the way songs were written in Music City through his poetic style and frank, emotional, and honest lyrics; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council honors the life and accomplishments of Kris Kristofferson.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as honoring the life and accomplishments of Kris Kristofferson.
Section 2. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
