A resolution commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Sister City Partnership between the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, the capital of the State of Tennessee, United States of America and Magdeburg, the capital of the State of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.

WHEREAS, the Sister Cities idea was inaugurated in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to establish friendship and understanding between the people of the United States and other nations through person-to-person exchange; and
WHEREAS, in furtherance of these goals, the citizens of Nashville, capital of Tennessee, United States of America, and the citizens of Magdeburg, Germany, have declared their willingness to work together for the purpose of creating mutual understanding and ensure a future of peace and freedom by creating a world of friendship; and
WHEREAS, our citizens have enjoyed reciprocal exchanges in science, culture and arts, sports, government, and education; and
WHEREAS, we celebrate this milestone year by sending and receiving anniversary delegations between our two cities, engaging hundreds of individuals, schools, and organizations in both Magdeburg and Nashville to celebrate and strengthen this important partnership; and
WHEREAS, we commemorate the twentieth anniversary of this robust Sister City partnership and treaty originally signed on May 28, 2003, by Bill Purcell, Mayor of Nashville and Dr. Lutz Trumper, Lord Mayor of Magdeburg; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Government through its Council, does recognize and support this partnership in hopes it will continue to grow and continue to build lasting friendships between the people of Nashville, Tennessee, United States of America and Magdeburg, Germany and to encourage cooperation between citizens in the areas of science, culture and the arts, sports, education, government and more.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
