An ordinance naming the North Nashville Transit Center, to be located at 2521 Clarksville Highway at 26th Avenue North, under the operation of the Metropolitan Transit Authority as the "Ernest 'Rip' Patton North Nashville Transit Center."

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requires that in order to name a building or structure of the metropolitan government, an ordinance must be adopted by the metropolitan county council (Metro Code ?13.26.010); and
WHEREAS, any ordinance filed seeking to name a building or structure under the operation or control of a board or commission of the metropolitan government shall have a recommendation of such board or commission prior to its adoption on second reading by the council (Metro Code ?13.26.020); and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Transit Authority is scheduled to complete a new neighborhood mobility center designed specifically to create and enhance multimodal transportation options and connections in North Nashville; and
WHEREAS, the concept of the North Nashville Transit Center is to serve as a place that reflects "the voices of North Nashville" through the past, present and future; and
WHEREAS, a central theme of the North Nashville Transit Center will be in honor of the Freedom Riders; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Transit Authority seeks to name the new North Nashville Transit Center to be located at 2521 Clarksville Highway at 26th Avenue North in honor of Ernest "Rip" Patton; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Patton was a member of the Nashville Freedom Riders, a former student at Tennessee State University, and long-time North Nashville resident who passed away on August 24, 2021 at the age of 81 years old; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Patton pursued the desegregation of interstate transportation facilities; and
WHEREAS, he spent 40 days in jail at the Mississippi State Penitentiary and was expelled from TSU, which was then called Tennessee A & I, for his civil rights activities; and
