A resolution recognizing John Overton High School alum Mookie Betts on winning his third World Series championship.

WHEREAS, Nashville native Markus Lynn "Mookie" Betts won the 2024 World Series as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers; and
WHEREAS, Betts' baseball career has deep roots in Nashville, both through youth baseball and his time at John Overton High School; and
WHEREAS, Betts excelled on the school's baseball, basketball, and bowling teams while playing for the Bobcats from 2008 to 2011. The John Overton baseball team has retired the number 7 jersey in his honor; and,
WHEREAS, the Boston Red Sox signed Betts following his graduation in 2011. Betts made his Major League Baseball debut for the club in 2014 and won his first World Series title with them in 2018; and
WHEREAS, Betts was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020, where he won additional championships in 2020 and 2024; and
WHEREAS, in his professional career, Betts is an eight-time All-Star, the 2018 American League Most Valuable Player, and the winner of six Gold Glove and six Silver Slugger Awards; and
WHEREAS, Betts has continued to support Nashville, Davidson County, and Middle Tennessee though his philanthropic work supporting young people in the region by providing meals, giving away school supplies, and funding youth sports teams; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper for the Metropolitan Council to recognize Mookie Betts, a graduate of Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools, for his accomplishments on and off the baseball field.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Mookie Betts for his third World Series championship and his support of Nashville and Davidson County.
Section 2. This resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County ...
