A resolution honoring the 55th Nashville Film Festival.

WHEREAS, this year marks the 55th Nashville Film Festival, which celebrates innovation, music and the many voices of the human spirit through the art of film; and
WHEREAS, founded in 1969, the Nashville Film Festival ("NashFilm") is one of the longest-running film festivals in the United States and the first in the South; and
WHEREAS, filmmakers who participate in NashFilm compete for cash and prizes valued at more than $100,000. Winners of the Short Documentary, Short Narrative and Short Animation competitions qualify for Academy Award consideration; and
WHEREAS, filmmakers from across the country and around the world attend the festival every year. Celebrity honorees and participants have included Willem Dafoe, Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney, Susan Sarandon, Matthew Modine, John Turturro, William H. Macy, Al Gore, Nicole Kidman, Danny Glover, Harmony Korine, Ashley Judd, Kiefer Sutherland, Joshua Jackson, Brad Paisley, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Patrick Swayze, John Waters, Matthew McConaughey, Robert Redford, James Cromwell, Harry Belafonte, and among many others; and
WHEREAS, NashFilm's Education Screening Program offers Metro Nashville Public School students, grades 8 through 12, the opportunity to attend the Nashville Film Festival, see a Festival film, and engage in in-depth discussions with filmmakers, producers, screenwriters at no cost to the schools, teachers or students; and
WHEREAS, this year, the Nashville Film Festival will take place from September 19 through 25, with films screening at arts venues including the Belcourt Theatre and Regal Green Hills. The NashFilm Creators Conference will take place at the Hilton Green Hills from September 20 through 22, and the Education Screening Program will take place September 20 and 23; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council go on record as honoring this milestone for the Nashville Film Festival.
