A resolution honoring Angie Adams for her service as President and CEO of PENCIL.

WHEREAS, Angie Adams has served as the President and CEO of PENCIL (Public Education Needs Community Involvement and Leadership) since 2016 and will be stepping down at the end of the 2023-2024 school year; and

 

WHEREAS, PENCIL is a nonprofit group that links community resources for Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools (“MNPS”) to help young people achieve academic success and prepare for life; and

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Adams has focused PENCIL’s programming to support MNPS’s strategic plan, established and maintained collaborations and partnerships across all industry sectors in Nashville, and has made PENCIL into an invaluable resource recruiter for MNPS; and

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Adams previously served as CFO and COO of other nonprofit groups for over 25 years, which gave her a strong background to lead PENCIL into its now 41st year; and

 

WHEREAS, she grew distributions from the DG PENCIL Box, the supply store that provides teachers with free, high-quality school supplies, from $350,000 to $3.5 million annually. During the pandemic, Ms. Adams led the nonprofit as it adapted the delivery of programs and services to students and teachers, responded to the ongoing needs for reading tutors, and created novel ways to keep partners and donors engaged; and

 

WHEREAS, internally, Ms. Adams tripled the size of the board of directors of PENCIL from 20 members to 60 members, created an Emerging Leaders Board, and launched PENCIL’s first endowment in 2020; and

 

WHEREAS, in her last full fiscal year as CEO, Ms. Adams helped PENCIL achieve $7.3 million in total community investment back to Metro schools through business partnerships and volunteer service, free product to educators, and grants to and for MNPS; and

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Adams has decades of experience providing financial and administrative services to a variety of nonprofit organizations. Before joining PENCIL, she served as Executive Director of Nashville Ballet where she led a capital campaign and physical expansion project to allow School of Nashville Ballet to double in size; and

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Adams was recently named as one of Nashville’s Most Admired Nonprofit CEOs by the Nashville Business Journal, who, in 2017 acknowledged her as a Women of Influence. She holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Belmont University’s Honors Program where she has also served as an adjunct faculty member; and

 

WHEREAS, she is an active member of The Rotary Club of Nashville where she currently serves on the board and regularly volunteers with Second Harvest Food Bank and the Arts and Business Council. Ms. Adams is now in her 37th year of dance studies and continues to take a variety of dance classes; and

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Adams is also a proud MNPS parent and her daughter will graduate with the MNPS Class of 2024; and

 

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize the contributions of Ms. Adams to public education in Nashville and Davidson County and wishes her well as she departs PENCIL at the end of the of the school year.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

 

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as honoring Angie Adams for her service as President and CEO of PENCIL and wish her continued success in her future endeavors.

 

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
