title

A resolution supporting the passage of Cameron’s Law, which accelerates rare disease innovation and access, by the United States Congress.

body

WHEREAS, more than 30 million Americans live with a rare disease, many of which are severe and debilitating, under-researched, and without an FDA-approved treatment; and

WHEREAS, many rare diseases affect children and require urgent, specialized interventions that are difficult to pursue because of small patient populations; and

WHEREAS, the current incentives in the federal Orphan Drug Act are foundational yet outdated. More rare disease drugs are priced out of reach, repurposed, or delayed in development; and

WHEREAS, Cameron’s Law was introduced in the United States Congress to respond to these gaps in the rare disease pipeline. Named for a young advocate who died while waiting for access to treatment, the resolution would increase the incentives and accountability for orphan drug development and distribution; and

WHEREAS, the legislation would specifically modernize the Orphan Drug Act, support equitable access to orphan drugs, increase transparency in drug pricing, approval, and exclusivity; and

WHEREAS, Cameron’s Law would also promote the use of real-world evidence and patient perspectives in the development of rare disease drugs and direct a report on barriers in the rare disease drug pipeline; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper for the Metropolitan Council to call for the passage of Cameron’s Law to support improved incentives for orphan drug development and equitable access to rare disease treatments.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as supporting the passage of House Resolution 1414, also known as Cameron’s Law, by the United States Congress.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
