body

WHEREAS, between Sunday, January 14, 2024, and Monday, January 15, 2024, a record 7.6 inches of snow fell on Nashville and Davidson County; and

WHEREAS, approximately 6.3 inches of snow arrived on Monday, marking a daily snowfall record for January 15; and

WHEREAS, this winter storm produced more snow in a 24 hour period than Nashville and Davidson County usually receive in an entire year; and

WHEREAS, after the storm, temperatures fell below zero degrees Fahrenheit on Wednesday, January 17, only the second time that temperatures in Nashville have fallen that low since 1996; and

WHEREAS, the extremely low temperatures prompted an unprecedented demand for electricity and the Tennessee Valley Authority urged conservation throughout its service area; and

WHEREAS, before the winter storm hit, the Metropolitan Government took the weather forecasts seriously and the Nashville Department of Transportation (“NDOT”) prepared the roads for snow and ice and spent time salting and plowing primary routes after the storm; and

WHEREAS, Metro’s Extreme Cold Weather Overflow Shelter was open from Sunday, January 14 through Saturday, January 20, operated by the Metro Social Services department and the Office of Homeless Services; and

WHEREAS, the Nashville Electric Service (“NES”) worked to keep power on across Nashville and Davidson County and, along with TVA, encouraged residents to conserve energy during the extremely low temperatures; and

WHEREAS, the Office of Emergency Management (“OEM”) conducted cold patrols, assisted motorists, and handed out blankets, gloves, and hats, while assisting individuals in need of shelter; and

WHEREAS, Metro Water Services provided important information and updates to the public regarding water usage, water mains, and garbage and recycling pick-up and the Nashville District Energy System worked throughout the week to keep the heat on downtown; and

WHEREAS, the Nashville Fire Department, Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, and the Department of Emergency Communications continued operations to assist residents of Nashville and Davidson County for all needs, weather-related or not; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes the work of these employees and the Council is grateful for their dependable service during the recent winter storm.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as honoring the workers who assisted Nashville and Davidson County throughout the recent winter storm.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
