A resolution honoring Tuwanda Coleman on the occasion of her retirement from NewsChannel 5.

WHEREAS, Tuwanda Coleman grew up in Cadiz, Kentucky, and later graduated cum laude from Western Kentucky University (“WKU”) with a Bachelor’s Degree in Broadcasting; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Coleman was first inspired to pursue a career in television after watching Oprah Winfrey deliver the news on NewsChannel 5; and
WHEREAS, two weeks after her graduation from WKU, she began her career at NewsChannel 5 as a studio camera operator; and
WHEREAS, she held this position for ten years. In the meantime, she became actively involved in producing and co-producing several station projects, including the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon and the Children Miracle Network Telethon benefiting the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt; and
WHEREAS, in 1992 Ms. Coleman joined the staff of "Talk of the Town" as an assistant producer. Six months later, she was promoted to full-time producer with the show, and in 2003 she moved became a field reporter for "Talk of the Town"; and
WHEREAS, in addition to “Talk of the Town”, Ms. Coleman hosts “The Plus Side of Nashville” and “Taste of the Town” for NewsChannel 5+; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Coleman serves on numerous boards and is involved with many organizations, including the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt Advisory Board, the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences, the Oasis Center, YMCA Black Achievers, Nashville Film Festival and Youth About Business. She is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, in 1995, Ms. Coleman was honored with a Mid-South regional Emmy nomination for her series of Black History Month tributes and weas nominated again in 2007 for her work on a NewsChannel 5 special highlight the Broadway musical “The Lion King”; and
WHEREAS, in 2015, Ms. Coleman was named the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals "Television Media Person of the Year" - an award given for over 30 years of dedication and efforts to promote and raise funds for the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt; and
WHEREAS, in her off time, Ms. Coleman enjoys traveling with her husband Charles, walking, and reading, and being a proud bonus-mom to her stepdaughter Yolanda; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes and celebrates Tuwanda Coleman on her retirement and commends her outstanding service to NewsChannel 5 and the residents of Nashville and Davidson County.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Tuwanda Coleman on her retirement from NewsChannel 5 and wishes her well in her retirement.
Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
