A resolution recognizing the 20th anniversary of the Nashville Public Library Foundation Literary Award Gala.

WHEREAS, each year, the Nashville Public Library Foundation honors distinguished authors and raises money for the Nashville Public Library’s education and literacy programs through its Literary Award Gala; and
WHEREAS, the Nashville Public Library Foundation Literary Award was first established in 2004 and involves a weekend-long celebration that honors the achievements of the annual recipient; and
WHEREAS, the Nashville Public Library Foundation has raised more than $68,000,000 to promote books, literacy, and reading in Nashville since it was founded in 1997; and
WHEREAS, the weekend of events attracts more than 1,000 cultural, political, community, and business leaders from across Nashville and beyond; and
WHEREAS, the celebration includes an annual free lecture that allows members of the public to attend a conversation with the Literary Award honoree; and
WHEREAS, this 2024 Literary Award recipient is James McBride, a celebrated author of fiction and non-fiction and a successful musician and screenwriter; and
WHEREAS, previous honorees have included extraordinary authors such as Colson Whitehead, Margaret Atwood, Doris Kearns Goodwin, John Lewis, Ann Patchett, and Jon Meacham; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize the work of the Nashville Public Library Foundation, its efforts to support the Nashville Public Library, and the 20th anniversary of its annual Literary Award Gala.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the Nashville Public Library Foundation Literary Award Gala in its 20th year.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
