WHEREAS, on July 25, 1990, the United States Congress passed the Americans with Disabilities Act (“ADA”) to ensure the civil rights of citizens with disabilities; and
WHEREAS, the ADA prevents discrimination based on disability, requires that employers provide reasonable accommodations, ensures that public accommodations meet accessibility requirements, and is recognized as one of the most important civil rights laws in history; and
WHEREAS, Disability Pride Month is celebrated each July to honor the enactment of the ADA and to celebrate the unique experiences, strengths, and achievements of people with disabilities and acknowledge their contributions to society; and
WHEREAS, Disability Pride offers an opportunity to honor the diverse identities of people with disabilities, and promote a greater understanding and acceptance of all residents; and
WHEREAS, it is essential to promote a society that embraces disability as an integral and valued part of human diversity, where all individuals are treated with dignity, respect, and equality, and where barriers to participation and inclusion are eliminated; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council appreciates the efforts of disability rights activists, organizations, and advocates who work tirelessly to advance the rights, independence, and well-being of individuals with disabilities, and to create a more inclusive and accessible world for all; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council is committed to supporting and equipping communities to become inclusive places for people with disabilities to pursue their goals and dreams.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing July 2024 as Disability Pride Month in Nashville and Davidson County.
Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
