A resolution recognizing Nashville Soccer Club for its first-ever championship by winning the 2025 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

WHEREAS, Nashville Soccer Club won the 2025 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on October 1, 2025, with a 2-1 win against Austin Football Club; and,

WHEREAS, this win marks Nashville Soccer Club’s first-ever championship and the first major professional sports championship in the State of Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, midfielder Hany Mukhtar scored early in the U.S. Open Cup Final, forward Sam Surridge added a decisive penalty kick before halftime, and goalkeeper Brian Schwake contributed seven critical saves, including one penalty kick save, while the entire squad and supporting staff demonstrated collective determination and spirit; and

WHEREAS, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is a tournament that includes both professional and amateur teams and stands as the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the United States; and

WHEREAS, the win secures the team's place in the 2026 CONCACAF Champions Cup, the premier international competition for clubs from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean; and

WHEREAS, Nashville Soccer Club traces its origins to supporter-owned Nashville FC, founded in 2013, which later joined the United Soccer League in 2016 before achieving Major League Soccer (“MLS”) expansion status in 2020 under new ownership led by John Ingram; and

WHEREAS, the club was built on strong community roots and developed through years of effort and passionate support, culminating in four consecutive MLS playoff appearances and a runner-up showing in the 2023 Leagues Cup; and

WHEREAS, Head Coach B.J. Callaghan affirmed that the victory reflected Nashville’s spirit, stating in a post-match interview that: “This team has been built to represent the city of Nashville, and I think you saw that tonight with the commitment and absolute team effort”; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper for the Metropolitan Council to congratulate and celebrate Nashville Soccer Club for its 2025 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Championship and commend the players, coaches, staff, and supporters for their role in this historic achievement.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1.                       The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Nashville Soccer Club for its first-ever championship by winning the 2025 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Section 2.                       This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
