WHEREAS, former Cane Ridge High School basketball star Brandon Miller has been selected by the Charlotte, North Carolina Hornets with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 National Basketball Association (NBA”) Draft; and

WHEREAS, Brandon grew up in Antioch, Tennessee, and attended Thurgood Marshall Middle School and Cane Ridge High School.  Millers father, Darrell Miller, played college football as a tight end at the University of Alabama; his older brother, Darrell, Jr., played college basketball at Fisk University in Nashville and professionally overseas; and Millers older sister plays Basketball at Cumberland University; and

WHEREAS, while at Cane Ridge High School, Brandon was named the Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year after averaging 23.3 points, eight rebounds, 4.3 assists, 2.6 blocks, and 2.3 steals per game during his junior season; and

WHEREAS, as a senior at Cane Ridge High, Brandon repeated as the Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year and was named Tennessee Mr. Basketball after averaging 24.1 points, 8.5 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 2.3 steals per game. Brandon also played in the Jordan Brand Classic and the McDonalds All-American Game; and

WHEREAS, Brandon was a consensus 5-Star recruit and one of the top players in the 2022 class. His first scholarship offer was from Tennessee State University whose basketball team is coached by Brandons cousin, Brian Collins.  On November 1, 2021, Miller committed to playing college basketball for the University of Alabama after considering offers from Kansas State University and Tennessee State University; and

WHEREAS, Brandon played one season for the University of Alabama, helping the Crimson Tide advance to the Sweet 16 and earning the titles of SEC Rookie of the Year, SEC Player of the Year, and being selected first team All-Conference; and

WHEREAS, Brandon was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2023 SEC Mens Basketball Tournament after averaging 20.3 points and 11 rebounds over three games.  He finished the season averaging an SEC-high of 18.8 points per game and also averaged 8.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists; and

WHEREAS, Coach Marlin Simms of Cane Ridge High school stated Brandon comes from an amazing family - mom, dad, sister, and brother. He is a better person than he is a basketball player”; and

WHEREAS, after being selected as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, Metro Police Chief John Drake, who has served as a mentor to Brandon, said, So exciting.  Hard work and determination pays off; now its time to show it all again”; and

WHEREAS, the entire Antioch Community is proud of Brandon Miller and his tremendous accomplishment of achieving is dream of being drafted to the National Basketball Association. A feat that only 2% of college basketball players attain.

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize and congratulate Brandon Miller on being selected as the No. 2 overall pick by the Charlotte Hornets in the 2023 NBA Draft.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing and congratulating Brandon Miller on being selected as the No. 2 overall pick by the Charlotte Hornets in the 2023 NBA Draft.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
