WHEREAS, each year, around the country, deadly threats like those that unfolded here in Nashville at The Covenant School on Monday, March 27, 2023 are targeted at American public schools; and

WHEREAS, these threats require schools to have safety measures in place to limit access to school buildings, to train school personnel on how to respond efficiently and effectively to these deadly threats, and to establish effective deterrence and responsive measures; and

WHEREAS, in the wake of the shooting at The Covenant School, parents, school staff and students alike are concerned for their safety; and

WHEREAS, in August of 2022, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department created the School Safety Division, meant to be a collaboration between MNPD and MNPS, to promote safe learning environments for education campuses across Nashville and Davidson County through the creation of empowered partnerships, meaningful deterrence, collaborative education, and effective response.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby directs the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department to conduct an evaluation of the safety plans and measures of the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools. This review shall include a list of recommendations that should be implemented district wide to include capital improvements, professional training and any human resources they see fit as well as individual site assessments for each MNPS school. This report shall be made public to the extent possible understanding some information will be site specific and should remain confidential.
