WHEREAS, building on the success of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Battle of the Brains sponsored by ESPN and the NFL, the Black Sports Business Symposium was held in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, to create a discussion on building a more inclusive and equitable professional sports community; and

WHEREAS, the three day symposium engaged 2,000 participants in the goal of increasing the representation of Blacks in sports off the field and supporting the career development of these future professionals as they advance in rank; and

WHEREAS, at the Black Sports Business Symposium's gala event, Fisk University received the HBCU of the Year Award, recognizing Fisk's highly successful efforts to create spaces and educational opportunities for future generations; and

WHEREAS, Dr. La Tanya Rogers, director of the W. E. B. Du Bois Honors Program at Fisk, senior and SGA President Daikerra Sweat, and Ms. Sheila Smith, SVP of Advancement and Enrollment Management, accepted the award on behalf of Fisk; and

WHEREAS, in addition to this honor, Fisk University's historic gymnastics team landed a docuseries about their journey after making history as the first HBCU gymnastics team to compete at an NCAA event on January 6, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada; and

WHEREAS, in fall 2022, Fisk University welcomed its largest freshman class in over 40 years, which included students from 33 states and five countries; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council celebrates with Fisk University, the oldest institution of higher learning in Nashville, for receiving the HBCU of the Year Award and further supports Fisk University in its future endeavors.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
