WHEREAS, the disposal of waste is a challenge to every city that has environmental, economic, and environmental justice impacts; and

WHEREAS, in December 2019, Nashville's Solid Waste Region Board approved a Zero Waste Master Plan to lead the region in achieving zero waste and the plan was then adopted by Metro Council in August 2021; and

WHEREAS, according to the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, Tennessee residents currently generate nearly 32% more waste on average than other Americans; and

WHEREAS, the goal of zero waste can be achieved in Nashville as increasing numbers of residents and businesses reduce, re-use, and recycle; and

WHEREAS, recycling is the process of collecting and processing materials that would otherwise be thrown away as trash and turning them into new products; and

WHEREAS, recycling reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators; conserves natural resources such as timber, water and minerals; increases economic security by tapping a domestic source of materials; prevents pollution by reducing the need to collect new raw materials; saves energy; supports American manufacturing and conserves valuable resources; helps create new good-paying jobs in the recycling and manufacturing industries in the United States; and

WHEREAS, Metro Waste Services' website provides valuable information on how to Recycle Right, empowering people to make environmentally conscious decisions when they buy or throw anything away; and

WHEREAS, benefits to Metro Nashville and its residents are measured not only by financial impact, but by the impact to the community, its people, and the environment.

WHEREAS, America Recycles Day is a national campaign of Keep America Beautiful that aims to raise awareness of recycling.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
