A resolution recognizing Non-Binary Awareness Week and International Non-Binary People's Day in Nashville and Davidson County.

body
WHEREAS, Non-Binary Awareness Week begins the Monday preceding International Non-Binary People's Day. This year, it begins on July 8 and culminates with International Non-Binary People's Day on July 14, 2024. This is an LGBTQ+ awareness period dedicated to those who do not identify with traditional genders; and

WHEREAS, since 2012, July 14 has been recognized around the world as International Non-Binary People's Day. This occasion shines a light on those who identify as non-binary and celebrates the rich diversity of the community; and

WHEREAS, July 14 was chosen as International Non-Binary People's Day because it falls exactly halfway between International Women's Day on March 8 and International Men's Day on November 19; and

WHEREAS, Non-binary, also sometimes known as Enby, is an umbrella term for people who do not exclusively identify as the male or female genders. Non-binary identities are varied, and people may identify as both male and female, or as primarily, but not exclusively, male or female. Others may reject the binary genders entirely and identify outside of them; and

WHEREAS, the goals of Non-Binary Awareness Week are to raise awareness of Non-Binary identities and to create a safe and inclusive space for Non-Binary people to share their stories and experiences; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize Non-Binary Awareness Week and International Non-Binary People's Day to raise awareness and organize around the issues faced by non-binary people in Nashville and Davidson County and around the world.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing July 8 through July 14, 2024, as Non-Binary Awareness Week and further recogn...
