A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department to conduct an evaluation of the safety plans and measures for Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools.

WHEREAS, each year, around the country, deadly threats are targeted at American schools; and
WHEREAS, these threats require schools to have safety measures in place to limit access to school buildings, train school personnel on how to respond efficiently and effectively to these deadly threats, and establish effective deterrence and responsive measures; and
WHEREAS, in the past two calendar years, there have been two shootings at schools in Davidson County-at The Covenant School on Monday, March 27, 2023, and at Antioch High School on Wednesday, January 22, 2025; and
WHEREAS, in the wake of the shootings at The Covenant School and Antioch High School, parents, school staff, and students alike are concerned for safety at their schools; and
WHEREAS, in August of 2022, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department created the School Safety Division, meant to be a collaboration between MNPD and MNPS, to promote safe learning environments for education campuses across Nashville and Davidson County through the creation of empowered partnerships, meaningful deterrence, collaborative education, and effective response; and
WHEREAS, the collaboration between MNPD, MNPS, and other partners can ensure that Nashville's response also includes increased resources for conflict resolution training and violence reduction, which will complement the requested safety plan evaluation; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council call on the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department to conduct an evaluation of safety plans and measures of Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
