A resolution honoring the life of former Member of Council Edith Taylor Langster.

WHEREAS, the Honorable Edith Taylor Langster passed away on June 30, 2024; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Langster was born in Painsville, Ohio, but became a lifelong North Nashvillian. She graduated from Pearl High school in 1967 and received a bachelor's degree from the Tennessee State University. She dedicated her life to serving those in Nashville and Davidson County; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Langster became the first female and first Black female patrol officer in the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department in 1972, breaking the mold of female officers who had previously only served in administrative roles; and
WHEREAS, she spent approximately 10 years with MNPD, learning to treat people with the same respect and regard no matter who they were; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Langster was first elected to the Metropolitan Council in 1991, representing District 20 for one four-year term; and
WHEREAS, following this term, Ms. Langster continued her public service through her election to the Tennessee General Assembly in 1995. She represented the neighborhoods of Bordeaux, North Nashville, West Nashville, and Whites Creek for six terms in the state House; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Langster returned to the Metro Council in 2007, representing North Nashville in District 21 for two terms and serving as chair of the Council's Public Safety Committee; and
WHEREAS, the Council member's interest in Metro Nashville never waned, as she continued to engage with the Council and the Council Office into the final weeks of her life; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Langster was also active in her church, St. Ann Catholic Church, and any number of community organizations in Nashville including the Davidson County Democratic Women's Club, the North Nashville Organization for Community Improvement, Top Ladies of Distinction, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the NAACP, and was a former member of the Nashville Symphony Board; and
