WHEREAS, International Drag Day celebrates the resilience, creativity, and empowerment of drag artists while recognizing their significant impact on the LGBTQ+ movement; and
WHEREAS, the occasion was created in 2009 as a way to celebrate and recognize drag artists around the world; and
WHEREAS, drag performance is an art form rooted in self-expression and performance and serves as a beacon of creativity and a symbol of community pride; and
WHEREAS, the history of American drag culture can be traced by to the late 19th century, when female impersonators were included in vaudeville shows and became popular in touring circuits across the country; and
WHEREAS, drag artists continued to perform in the face of discrimination and helped this community to be accepted and celebrated as a part of LGBTQ+ culture and in the broader mainstream; and
WHEREAS, drag artists have a long and proud history in Nashville and Davidson County, where entertainers have continued to shine despite state laws that attempt to limit their ability to perform and express themselves; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper for the Metropolitan Council to recognize the work of drag artists and celebrate the effects they have had on life and culture in the LGBTQ+ community in Nashville and Davidson County.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That the Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing July 16, 2025, as International Drag Day in Nashville and Davidson County.
Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
