WHEREAS, Older Americans Month serves a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country; and

WHEREAS, the month was formally recognized as “Senior Citizens Month” in 1963 through a proclamation from President John F. Kennedy; and

WHEREAS, the 2025 Older Americans Month theme, “Flip the Script on Aging,” focuses on transforming how society perceives, talks about, and approaches aging and encourages individuals and communities to challenge stereotypes and dispel misconceptions; and

WHEREAS, an estimated 13.3 percent of Nashville and Davidson County residents are age 65 or older, according to the 2024 Community Needs Evaluation from Metro Social Services; and

WHEREAS, several events to recognize Older Americans Month were held in Nashville; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper for the Metropolitan Council to honor older adults’ contributions and highlight the opportunities for purpose, exploration, and connection that come with aging.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing May 2025 as Older Americans Month in Nashville and Davidson County.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
