body
WHEREAS, the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, often known as TPAC, opened its doors on September 6, 1980, following nearly a decade of dedicated efforts led by Martha Ingram and a group of committed volunteers, with support from state and local leaders, to realize the vision of a premier arts facility for the citizens of Tennessee; and
WHEREAS, the Tennessee Performing Arts Center has since stood as a cornerstone for Tennessee's cultural life, advancing the performing arts and arts education by providing stages for resident companies including the Nashville Ballet, Nashville Opera, Nashville Repertory Theatre, and Nashville Symphony, and hosting touring productions that bring cultural and educational enrichment to the region; and
WHEREAS, TPAC also manages the historic War Memorial Auditorium, preserving and continuing its use as a performance and community venue; and
WHEREAS, the War Memorial Auditorium was dedicated on September 21, 1925, and has since stood as a landmark venue with a 2,000-seat performance hall adjacent to the War Memorial Plaza and Tennessee State Capitol. It served as the home of the Grand Ole Opry from 1939 through 1943, and artists such as Minnie Pearl and Ernest Tubb were inducted during its run; and
WHEREAS, together, TPAC and the War Memorial Auditorium embody a century of Tennessee's dedication to artistic vision, advancing opportunities for both established institutions and emerging artists, and reinforcing Nashville's role as a center for performance, culture, and education; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper for the Metropolitan Council to commend the continued contributions of the Tennessee Performing Arts Center and War Memorial Auditorium to the cultural life of Nashville and Davidson County.
