WHEREAS, democracy depends upon the free expression of ideas, including the right of every person to hold, share, and advocate for their opinions without fear of violence or intimidation; and
WHEREAS, political violence in any form is a threat to our shared values, our communities, and the safety and security of our nation; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council affirms that differences of opinion must be addressed through civil discourse and lawful processes, not through acts of aggression or intimidation; and
WHEREAS, political violence erodes public safety, weakens community trust, and undermines the unity that is necessary for a healthy democracy; and
WHEREAS, state and federal leaders hold both the responsibility and the power to advance meaningful efforts to reduce violence and foster unity rather than division.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That the Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as expressing its unified condemnation of political violence in all forms.
Section 2. That the Metropolitan Council affirms its support for the right of every person to hold and voice their opinions free from fear or intimidation.
Section 3. That the Metropolitan Council calls upon leaders at the state and federal levels to prioritize unity over division and to enact policies that address political violence, recognizing that gun violence has no bias and affects all communities equally.
Section 4. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
