WHEREAS, Section 7-3-314 of the Tennessee Code Annotated states that metropolitan forms of government may provide financial assistance to nonprofit organizations; and,

WHEREAS, Section 5.04.070 of the Metropolitan Code of Laws provides that the Council may, by Resolution, appropriate funds for the financial aid of nonprofit organizations; and,

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, acting by and through the Mayor’s Office, wishes to appropriate funding and contract with Fisk University to provide youth participatory action research; and

WHEREAS, the funds will further the mission of the Office of Youth Safety by enabling Fisk University to conduct youth participatory action research highlighting youth experiences of safety and vulnerability with a focus on areas of the county where there are high rates of gun violence; and,

WHEREAS, it is to the benefit of the citizens of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County that these funds be appropriated to Fisk University and the contract approved.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1.                     There is hereby appropriated $43,192.28 from the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, acting by and through the Office of the Mayor, to Fisk University to provide youth participatory action research.

Section 2.                     The grant contract between the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County and Fisk University, attached hereto and incorporated herein, is hereby approved.

Section 3.                     That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.

This resolution appropriates $43,192.28 from the Office of the Mayor to Fisk University and approves a related grant agreement to provide youth participatory action research to further the mission of the Office of Youth Safety.

 

According to the grant agreement, Fisk University would conduct youth participatory action research focused on youth safety in Nashville and Davidson County. The project would engage young people as co-researchers to identify the places, conditions, experiences, and supports that shape their sense of safety.

 

The grant term would begin on the date that the agreement is approved by the Metropolitan Council and end on October 31, 2027. 

 

Tenn. Code Ann. section 7-3-314 authorizes the Metropolitan Government to provide financial assistance to nonprofit organizations. Section 5.04.070 of the Metropolitan Code of Laws provides that the Metropolitan Council may appropriate funds for the financial aid of nonprofit organizations by resolution.
