An ordinance providing the honorary street name designation of “Jerry Austin Way” for a portion of Valeria Street.

WHEREAS, Jerry Austin served as district Councilmember for the 27th District from 1983 to 1995; and

 

WHEREAS, the boundaries of the 27th District are now part of the 16th District; and 

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Austin was a dedicated public servant and integral in bringing Averitt Express to the area, creating jobs and fostering economic growth; and

 

WHEREAS, he sponsored key legislation allowing Metro Nashville employees to live outside Davidson County; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Austin’s deep love for his district and its residents was evident in his lifelong commitment and sacrifices for the community he cherished; and

 

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council memorializing Mr. Austin on Valeria Street, the site of his family home; and

 

WHEREAS, Chapter 13.08 of the Metropolitan Code of Laws provides for the designation of honorary street names and signs without amending the Official Street and Alley Acceptance and Maintenance Map for the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, and without requiring residents and businesses to change their address.

 

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT ENACTED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

 

Section 1. That Valeria Street between Sterling Boone Drive and Peachtree Street is hereby designated with the honorary street name of “Jerry Austin Way”.

 

Section 2. This honorary street designation will not require any resident or business located on Valeria Street to change its street address.

 

Section 3. The Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure is hereby authorized and directed, upon the enactment and approval of this Ordinance, to install the appropriate signage designating this section of roadway as “Jerry Austin Way” in accordance with 13.08.025 of the Metropolitan Code.

 

Section 4. This Ordinance shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
