A resolution recognizing the 25th anniversary of the creation of the Mayor’s Youth Council.

WHEREAS, Mayor Phil Bredesen and the Metropolitan Government recognized a need for teenagers to be involved in local government and first created the Mayor’s Youth Council by executive order on August 25, 1999; and

 

WHEREAS, the Mayor’s Youth Council was tasked to meet with the Metropolitan Mayor regularly and provide direct and ongoing input on government policies affecting teenagers, recommend and foster initiatives for an by youth, act as a link between the Metropolitan Government and the young people of Nashville, provide and recognize the abilities, accomplishments, and contributions of young people in their communities, and organize events such as an annual Mayor’s Youth Summit; and

 

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Government quickly partnered with the Oasis Center to facilitate the program on an annual basis; and

 

WHEREAS, the Mayor’s Youth Council now includes up to fifty high school juniors and seniors who represent the geographic, racial, and ethnic diversity of Nashville and Davidson County; and

 

WHEREAS, these students regularly choose the initiatives that they wish to support and advocate for during their one-year term; and

 

WHEREAS, the program works annually to engage younger Nashvillians in community projects, provide a platform for youth to voice their concerns and interact with the Metropolitan Government and community stakeholders, and give young people access to needed resources and services; and

 

WHEREAS, in its quarter century of existence, the Mayor’s Youth Council helped develop the leadership skills of hundreds of Nashville students and supported these young people as they rose to various leadership roles in Nashville and Davidson County, the state of Tennessee, and the United States of America; and

 

WHEREAS, the Oasis Center and the Mayor’s Office celebrated the Mayor’s Youth Council’s 25 years of service with an anniversary event on September 16, 2024; and

 

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper for the Metropolitan Council to honor the Mayor’s Youth Council, the Oasis Center, and the program’s alumni for their efforts and service to Nashville and Davidson County.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY THAT:

 

Section 1. The Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the 25th anniversary of the Mayor’s Youth Council and the young leaders that have participated in the program.

 

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
