A resolution recognizing the International Black Film Festival for its 20th anniversary.

WHEREAS, the International Black Film Festival (“IBFF”) was founded in 2005 in Nashville by Hazel Joyner-Smith to provide a platform for films by and about people of African descent; and
WHEREAS, in that time, IBFF has presented thousands of films across many genres and has offered workshops, masterclasses, and panels that support the growth of artists, professionals, and students; and
WHEREAS, the festival has opened doors for filmmakers, including students and emerging artists, by connecting them with industry leaders and opportunities for distribution; and
WHEREAS, IBFF has welcomed respected artists and leaders such as Debbie Allen, who served as Honorary Chair, along with guests including Gina Prince-Bythewood, Bill Duke, Mykelti Williamson, Nate Parker, Ledisi, and Sheryl Lee Ralph; and
WHEREAS, in its 20th anniversary year, the festival is joined by Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman in recognition of its continued cultural impact; and
WHEREAS, IBFF has helped establish Nashville as a home not only for music but also for independent film, while contributing to the growth of film production across the South; and
WHEREAS, 2025 marks the 20th Anniversary of the International Black Film Festival, a milestone that reflects two decades of programming and commitment to education, equity, and community impact; and
WHEREAS, this anniversary recognizes IBFF’s role in preserving stories, supporting talent, and preparing new generations of filmmakers for the future.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That the Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the International Black Film Festival for its 20th anniversary.
Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
