title

A resolution requesting the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department to conduct an evaluation of the safety plans and measures for Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools.

body

WHEREAS, each year, around the country, deadly threats are targeted at American schools; and

WHEREAS, these threats require schools to have safety measures in place to limit access to school buildings, train school personnel on how to respond efficiently and effectively to these deadly threats, and establish effective deterrence and responsive measures; and

WHEREAS, in the past two calendar years, there have been two shootings at schools in Davidson County-at The Covenant School on Monday, March 27, 2023, and at Antioch High School on Wednesday, January 22, 2025; and

WHEREAS, in the wake of the shootings at The Covenant School and Antioch High School, parents, school staff, and students alike are concerned for safety at their schools; and

WHEREAS, in August of 2022, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department created the School Safety Division, meant to be a collaboration between MNPD and MNPS, to promote safe learning environments for education campuses across Nashville and Davidson County through the creation of empowered partnerships, meaningful deterrence, collaborative education, and effective response; and

WHEREAS, the collaboration between MNPD, MNPS, and other partners can ensure that Nashville's response also includes increased resources for conflict resolution training and violence reduction, which will complement the requested safety plan evaluation; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council call on the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department to conduct an evaluation of safety plans and measures of Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby requesting the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department to conduct an evaluation of the safety plans and measures of the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools. This review should include a list of recommendations that should be implemented district wide to include capital improvements, professional training and any human resources they see fit as well as individual site assessments for each MNPS school.  This report should be made public to the extent possible understanding some information will be site specific and should remain confidential.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council further requests that Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools create a report outlining its plan to adopt these recommendations, including a timeline for implementation, and provide specific reasons for declining to adopt any recommendations.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
