WHEREAS, Section 7-3-314 of the Tennessee Code Annotated states that metropolitan forms of government may provide financial assistance to nonprofit organizations; and,

WHEREAS, Section 5.04.070 of the Metropolitan Code of Laws provides that the Council may, by Resolution, appropriate funds for the financial aid of nonprofit organizations; and,

WHEREAS, Metropolitan Charter Section 10.104 provides that the Board of Health has the duty to contract for such services as will further the program and policies of the Board, subject to confirmation by Resolution of Council; and,

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Public Health Department has accepted applications from nonprofit organizations to receive Community Safety Fund grants; and,

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Board of Health has recommended that a total of $150,000 of the funds appropriated for community safety grants in the Budget Ordinance (Substitute BL2025-833), be distributed to Southern Word, Inc. to provide school-based children with writing, presentation, and school-based mentorship to reduce and mitigate violence as part of the Community Safety Initiative; and,

WHEREAS, it is to the benefit of the citizens of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County that this contract be approved.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1.                     There is hereby appropriated a total of One Hundred Fifty Thousand Dollars ($150,000) from Fund No. 30164 to Southern Word, Inc. to provide school-based children with writing, presentation, and school-based mentorship to reduce and mitigate violence as part of the Community Safety Initiative.

Section 2.                     The Metropolitan Government, acting by and through the Metropolitan Board of Health, is hereby authorized to enter into a grant contract, attached hereto and incorporated herein, with Southern Word, Inc. for the amount provided herein and the purposes stated. 

Section 3.                     That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.

This resolution appropriates a total of $150,000 from the Board of Health’s Community Safety Fund to Southern Word, Inc. The funds would be used to provide school-age children with writing, presentation, and school-based mentorship to reduce and mitigate violence as a part of the Community Safety Initiative.

 

Pursuant to this grant agreement, Southern Word, Inc. will host 400 young adults for a 12-week program focusing on music and writing skill and personal development. In accordance with the grant contract, Southern Word must collect data to evaluate the effectiveness of their services. Southern Word must track number of participants served, frequency of services provided, and other data as requested.

 

The term of the grant is 12 months, beginning upon approval of all parties and filing in the Metropolitan Clerk’s Office.

 

Tenn. Code Ann. section 7-3-314 authorizes the Metropolitan Government to provide financial assistance to nonprofit organizations. Section 5.04.070 of the Metropolitan Code of Laws provides that the Metropolitan Council may by Resolution appropriate funds for the financial aid of nonprofit organizations.
