A resolution expressing support to the Tennessee General Assembly for House Bill 2814/Senate Bill 2710 regarding drag racing.

body

WHEREAS, Nashville has seen an increase in drag racing since the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020; and

WHEREAS, drag racing has caused significant damage to both public and private property, as well as causing minor and fatal injuries due to the reckless behavior; and

WHEREAS, the seizing of vehicles of those involved in drag racing was employed briefly in 2023 with some success in taming this dangerous behavior, until that option was rescinded in Davidson County; and

WHEREAS, House Bill 2814/Senate Bill 2710 seeks to remedy this public safety concern by allowing all municipalities statewide to be able to seize vehicles upon arrest of the driver by making drag racing a Class E felony; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council desires to express its support for this state legislation and the public safety remedy that it would provide.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as expressing support to the Tennessee General Assembly for House Bill 2814/Senate Bill 2710 regarding drag racing.

Section 2. That this resolution shall take effect from and after its final passage, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
