WHEREAS, Chapter 2.132 of the Metropolitan Code of Laws establishes the Metropolitan Human Relations Commission ("MHRC"), with the mission of protecting and promoting the personal dignity of all people by protecting and promoting their safety, health, security, peace, and general welfare; and

WHEREAS, Section 2.132.030 provides that the MHRC is made up of 17 members with staggered terms of three years; and

WHEREAS, in 1999, due to a mistake on their appointment letters, six members were appointed to two-year terms instead of three-year terms and this pattern was maintained for over two decades; and

WHEREAS, currently, eleven members of the MHRC have terms that are set to expire on April 18, 2025; and

WHEREAS, in order to correct the staggering and allow for members of the MHRC to be appointed each year, once these 11 members are eligible for reappointment, five seats should be appointed for three-years terms and six should be reappointed for four-year terms; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council desires to correct the staggering for the membership of the MHRC in order to comply with the intent of Chapter 2.132 of the Metropolitan Code of Laws.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ENACTED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That, when reappointing the 11 seats of the Metropolitan Human Relations Commission with terms that are set to expire on April 18, 2025, five seats shall serve terms expiring on April 18, 2028 and six seats shall serve terms expiring on April 18, 2029. Thereafter, all members shall serve terms of three years. This action is taken to correct the staggering to be consistent with the language in Section 2.132.030 of the Metropolitan Code of Laws.
