A resolution urging the Tennessee General Assembly to support House Bill 1969/Senate Bill 2066 to require the installation of carbon monoxide alarms in daycares.

WHEREAS, under existing state law, only certain daycares in Tennessee are required to have carbon monoxide alarms, based on the age of the daycare and the number of children that attend the daycare; and
WHEREAS, in early January 2024, a daycare in Donelson discovered a carbon monoxide leak. Dozens of children were exposed to the dangerous gas and some even required hospitalization; and
WHEREAS, carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas which can be difficult to detect. When too much carbon monoxide is in the air, it can build up in a person’s blood and lead to damage to the nervous system and brain and can even lead to death; and
WHEREAS, in order to address the situation at the Donelson daycare, Representative Darren Jernigan and Senator Paul Bailey filed House Bill 1969/Senate Bill 2066 to require that all daycares licensed by the State of Tennessee have carbon monoxide alarms in every room where children are present; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council express its support for House Bill 1969/Senate Bill 2066.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That the Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as urging the Tennessee General Assembly to support House Bill 1969/Senate Bill 2066, sponsored by Representative Darren Jernigan and Senator Paul Bailey, to require the installation of carbon monoxide alarms in all state-licensed daycares.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to each member of the Davidson County Delegation to the Tennessee General Assembly.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
