A resolution honoring the victims of the Covenant School shooting on March 27, 2023 and recognizing the actions of the Covenant School staff.

WHEREAS, on March 27, 2023, at 10:13 am the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (“MNPD”) received a report of a shooting at the Covenant School, located in Green Hills; and

 

WHEREAS, MNPD, Nashville, and the rest of the world soon found out that the unthinkable had occurred - an assailant armed with multiple firearms breached the campus of the Covenant School and killed six innocent people; and

 

WHEREAS, MNPD responded swiftly and the assailant was killed by police minutes after the shooting began; and

 

WHEREAS, in the aftermath of the massacre, the six victims were identified as nine-year-old Hallie Scruggs, nine-year-old Evelyn Dieckhaus, nine-year-old William Kinney, school custodian Mike Hill, substitute teacher Cynthia Peak, and head of school Katherine Koonce; and

 

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council and all of Nashville grieve with the families who lost loved ones in this senseless act of violence and sends healing comfort to the Covenant School; and

 

WHEREAS, the Covenant teachers and staff, led by Katherine Koonce had prepared for this horrible moment, with the hope that it would never occur; and

 

WHEREAS, because the school had completed active shooter training, teachers, staff, and students were prepared for the worst and lives were undoubtably saved because of these actions; and

 

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council grieves with the Covenant School and sends its deepest sympathies for the loss of members of the Covenant School family; and

 

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council further commends the Covenant school staff and students for their actions on March 27, 2023, which prevented further loss of life and protected hundreds of students.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

 

Section 1. That the Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as honoring the memory of Hallie Scruggs, Evelyn Dieckhaus, William Kinney, Mike Hill, Cynthia Peak, and Katherine Koonce who were killed at the Covenant School on March 27, 2023. The Metropolitan Council hereby sends its support to the Covenant School and all who are grieving the loss of these six lives and affected by this senseless tragedy.

 

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council further goes on record as recognizing the Covenant School and its staff for its actions on March 27, 2023, to keep students, faculty, and staff safe, and its prior actions to prepare students and staff for this unthinkable event.

 

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
