WHEREAS, on March 27, 2023, an assailant armed with multiple firearms breached the campus of the Covenant School in Green Hills and killed six innocent people; and

WHEREAS, Hallie Scruggs, Evelyn Dieckhaus, William Kinney, Mike Hill, Cynthia Peak, and Katherine Koonce were killed in the shooting; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department ("MNPD") received the first 911 call at 10:12 that morning and officers arrived on the scene within minutes; and

WHEREAS, in an effort that has been called "textbook" and "outstanding" by experts, five MNPD officers went into the school and began clearing classrooms before hearing gunshots and running toward the danger; and

WHEREAS, MNPD officers, including Officer Rex Engelbert, Detective Michael Collazo, Detective Jeff Mathes and the three other officers who entered the building, responded to the call and saved countless lives with their swift and heroic actions; and

WHEREAS, the Nashville Fire Department ("NFD") and Emergency Medical Services ("EMS") were also quick to respond to the scene, entering the building as soon as it was safe, transporting victims for medical care, and setting up and coordinating services at the reunification site; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council, on behalf of all of Nashville, do hereby commend and thank first responders from the MNPD, NFD, and EMS for their actions on March 27, 2023 at the Covenant School.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as commending the first responders from the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, Nashville Fire Department, and Emergency Medical Services who responded to the Covenant School shooting on March 27, 2023.
