A Resolution recognizing Tamia Potter as Vanderbilt University's first African American female neurosurgery resident.

WHEREAS, Tamia Potter is the first African American woman to join Vanderbilt University's Neurosurgery Program since the medical school's opening in 1874; and

WHEREAS, the 26-year-old Florida native graduated summa cum laude in 2018 with a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) in Tallahassee, before attending Case Western Reserve University Medical School in Cleveland; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Potter's fascination and curiosity with the human brain began at a young age and her first job was as a certified nursing assistant at age 17; and

WHEREAS, she spent her nights during college working at a nursing home caring for individuals with dementia and further fueled her curiosity to understand and solve neurological diseases and injuries; and

WHEREAS, according to data from the Association of American Medical Colleges, only about 5.7% of physicians in the United States identify as Black or African American and a 2019 association report showed there are just 33 Black female neurosurgeons in the country; and

WHEREAS, this historic moment would not be possible without Ms. Potter's hard work and dedication and it is a privilege to have outstanding leaders like her in our community to help influence and guide future generations; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize Tamia Potter as Vanderbilt University's first African American female neurosurgery resident and extend best wishes to her as she continues in her journey and career.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Tamia Potter as Vanderbilt University's first African American female neurosurgery resident and wishes her continued success.
