A Resolution establishing that the second Tuesday of May of each year is recognized as Strangulation Awareness Day in Nashville.

WHEREAS, 54% of victims who answered the Lethality Assessment Protocol (LAP) in Nashville in 2021 indicate they have been strangled at some point in their relationship by their current partner, and the more correct number is likely to be much higher due to rates of underreporting interpersonal violence; and

 

WHEREAS, Metropolitan Government recognizes that strangulation is a severe and deadly form of abuse that is prevalent in interpersonal crimes and values the survivors who have experienced it as well as the law enforcement, first responders, medical professionals, advocates, counselors, and prosecutors working to serve victims and hold offenders accountable; and

 

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan County Council establishes the second Tuesday of May each year as Strangulation Awareness Day and urges all citizens of Nashville to support local efforts to assist victims of strangulation to find the safety and medical attention they need.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

 

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the second Tuesday of May of each year as Strangulation Awareness Day.

 

Section 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to the Metropolitan Government Office of Family Safety, MNPD, NFD, and the District Attorney’s Office.

 

Section 3. That this Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
