A resolution in support of joining the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities to further livability in Nashville and Davidson County.

WHEREAS, the health, safety, and well-being of residents of all ages is of utmost importance to the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, and the city of Nashville; and
WHEREAS, as the Nashville and Davidson County population ages and people stay healthier and active longer, communities must adapt; and
WHEREAS, there are over one million individuals over the age of 65 in Tennessee, and in Middle Tennessee, nearly 20 percent of individuals over the age of 65 are dependent upon others in some way to maintain their quality of life -- an indication that services and support are critical for many older adults in our communities; and
WHEREAS, planning processes such as those relating to housing, transportation, park systems, and economic development activities should include the needs of all people, regardless of age, gender, income, physical ability, or race; and
WHEREAS, community decisions regarding public infrastructure and services, including public spaces, housing, and transportation, should be consistent with comprehensive plans that have been developed with public input; and
WHEREAS, members of the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities become part of a global network of communities committed to giving their older residents the opportunity to live rewarding, productive, and safe lives; and
WHEREAS, membership in the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities includes access to financial assistance and technical expertise.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That the Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as supporting participation in the planning process associated with the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities to ensure Nashville is a well-designed, livable community that promotes health and sustained economic growth for residents of all ages.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Council further goes on record as requesting that the AARP, in participation with the Mayor’s Office, facilitate development of the city’s plan among relevant Metro departments and community stakeholders.
Section 3. The Metropolitan Council further goes on record as requesting that it be provided annual updates by the AARP on its progress in implementing measures identified in the city’s plan.
Section 4. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
