A Resolution to commemorate the 52nd anniversary of Earth Day and to recognize April 23, 2022, as Earth Day in Nashville and Davidson County.

WHEREAS, April 22, 2022, marks the 52nd anniversary of Earth Day. The theme of Earth Day 2022 is “Invest In Our Planet;” and
WHEREAS, Earth Day began on April 22, 1970 to protest environmental destruction and marked the beginning of the modern environmental movement; and
WHEREAS, United States Senator Gaylord Nelson envisioned the first Earth Day as a nationwide teach-in to educate the public and elected officials about our role in protecting the environment; and
WHEREAS, Earth Day led to the passage of landmark environmental laws in the United States, including the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act; and
WHEREAS, Earth Day is a time to reflect on the impact humans have on Earth, how we affect the global environment and climate, and how that, in turn, affects our own health and well-being; and
WHEREAS, as we continue to live through the COVID-19 pandemic, we are reminded that we are all caretakers of our planet and have an obligation to combat climate change and environmental degradation to preserve the earth’s beauty and resources; and
WHEREAS, all people, regardless of race, gender, income, or geography, have a right to a healthy, sustainable environment with economic growth and opportunity; and
WHEREAS, this is the moment to solve the climate crisis, to choose both a prosperous and sustainable future, and to restore nature and build a healthy planet for our children and their children; and
WHEREAS, Earth Day is an opportunity for our residents to take action in their communities to combat climate change and environmental degradation, support green economy initiatives, and encourage others to undertake similar actions; and
WHEREAS, Earth Day is an occasion to clean up local parks, green spaces, and waterways and to address everyday actions that contribute to climate change and environmental harm; and
WHEREAS, on Saturday, April 23, 2022, Nashville Earth Day returns to the Great Lawn in Centennial Park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. This free family event brings the Nashville community together to celebrate our planet, inspire positive environmental change, and support sustainable small businesses and nonprofits.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as commemorating the 52nd anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, 2022.
Section 2. The Metropolitan County Council further goes on record as recognizing April 23, 2022, as Earth Day in Nashville and Davidson County.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
