A Resolution encouraging recycling efforts in Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County and requesting the Metropolitan Department of Water and Sewerage Services incentivize recycling efforts.

body

WHEREAS, the reduction of waste in Nashville and Davidson County is an important issue. The Waste Services Division of the Metropolitan Department of Water and Sewerage Services (MWS) is working toward a Zero Waste goal to minimize the waste we generate and maximize the diversion of materials from landfills through sustainable solid waste management practices; and

WHEREAS, important components in achieving the Zero Waste goal are to reduce consumption and increase reuse, recycling, and composting instead of landfilling for waste; and

WHEREAS, recycling in Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County has been in decline in recent years, both in per capita rates and in overall tonnage; and

WHEREAS, while there has been a decrease in overall recycling rates, there has also been a decrease in contamination rates for recycled items over the last year; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Council requests that the Waste Services Division of MWS continue its efforts to increase recycling in Nashville and Davidson County by incentivizing recycling, and to further create a goal of increasing recycling in Nashville by 25% over the next two years; and

WHEREAS, in addition, the Waste Services Division of MWS should also continue its efforts to reduce contamination by residential recyclers and continue to educate the public on the importance of reducing contamination in recycling.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan County Council goes on record as encouraging recycling efforts in Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County, including increasing recycling by residential recyclers and encouraging educating the public on the importance of reducing contamination in recycling.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council further goes on record as requesting the Waste Services Division of the Metropolitan Department of Water and Sewerage Services to make efforts to increase and incentivize recycling, with a goal of increasing recycling in Nashville by 25% over the next two years.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
