A resolution commemorating the 200th anniversary of Vine Street Christian Church.

WHEREAS, in the city of Nashville, Vine Street Christian Church, a Disciples of Christ congregation, does hereby celebrate in the month of October 2021, the occasion of the 200th anniversary of its founding, a significant historical event delayed one year out of an abundance of caution due to the COVID-19 pandemic; and,

 

WHEREAS, Vine Street Christian Church traces its beginning back to 1820, with the founding of the Nashville Baptist Church, the congregation’s formal founding occurring eight years later, with 218 members; and,

 

WHEREAS, the church met in an 1821 building that faced Church Street, then relocated to an 1889 building that faced Vine Street, now 7th Avenue North; and,

 

WHEREAS, the congregation met in downtown Nashville until 1957, then moving to a new location on Harding Pike, where the congregation continues to meet today; and,

 

WHEREAS, the majestic church, with its soaring steeple, was designed by renowned Nashville architect Edwin A. Keeble, and continues to provide the structure for a vibrant community of worship, education, spiritual growth, and service; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Metro Nashville Historical Commission has made permanent the significance and contributions of Vine Street Christian Church with the placement of two historical markers - one for each of the church’s locations - for generations to come; and,

 

WHEREAS, for 201 years, the congregation of Vine Street Christian Church has continued to serve God and neighbor in the spirit of ecumenicism, interfaith cooperation, and social justice.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

 

Section 1. The Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing and honoring the 200th Anniversary of the founding of Vine Street Christian Church in Nashville and its continuous presence in the life of Nashville during the 201 years since the time of its founding.

 

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
