body

WHEREAS, it is in the best interests of the Davidson County community for students to attend school in-person; and

WHEREAS, COVID-19 cases are accelerating in Metro Nashville due to low vaccination rates and the transmissibility of the delta variant; and

WHEREAS, for schools to remain open for in-person learning, the likelihood of COVID-19 outbreaks needs to be minimized; and

WHEREAS, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have both recommended universal mask-wearing in school buildings to limit the spread of COVID-19; and

WHEREAS, following the issuance of the AAP and CDC recommendations, the Metropolitan Nashville Board of Education voted on August 5, 2021 to require the wearing of masks in school buildings; and

WHEREAS, this vote gives students the greatest likelihood of remaining safely in person during this period when our population remains vulnerable.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as supporting the Metropolitan Nashville Board of Education’s decision to increase the likelihood of schools remaining open by requiring the wearing of masks in school buildings and on school buses.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
