title

A resolution recognizing July 23, 2021 as National Women Touched by Addiction Day.

body

WHEREAS, National Women Touched by Addiction Day was created in March 2021 by Mending Hearts, a grant-funded recovery based therapeutic community for women struggling with addiction; and

WHEREAS, Mending Hearts was founded by Katrina Frierson in 2004 and currently offers housing and treatment to 110 women; and

WHEREAS, Mending Hearts has helped over 5,000 women overcome addiction since 2004 through a full continuum of care in a supportive community environment regardless of their ability to pay; and

WHEREAS, these years of committed service to providing healing for women in addiction have brought to light the desperate need for the public to recognize that substance abuse disorder is a disease and should not be stigmatized. Mending Hearts strives to address the diverse needs of all women affected by addiction; and

WHEREAS, Mending Hearts seeks to give these women a voice so together we can advocate for public awareness, education, and encourage others to recognize their resilience; and

WHEREAS, “Women Touched by Addiction Day” will be recognized annually on July 23rd and provide a unique opportunity for the citizens of Nashville and Davidson County to join together in commending women for their strength to speak out, and provide women with a day to connect and uplift one another over their shared struggle; and

WHEREAS, Mending Hearts invites the public to gather on the Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge at 7:00 PM on July 23rd to hear speakers share their personal stories; and

WHEREAS, as the founder of National Women Touched by Addiction Day, Mending Hearts lifts up women who have faced addiction firsthand or have felt its effects through others; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes National Women Touched by Addiction Day and encourages all Nashvillians to recognize the positive impact this day will have on women affected by addiction.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
