A resolution honoring and congratulating Eddie George, as the 22nd head football coach at Tennessee State University (TSU).

WHEREAS, on April 13, 2021 Eddie George was named the 22nd head football coach at Tennessee State University (TSU). Eddie George brings a deep knowledge as a former National Football League (NFL) running back to this position; and

WHEREAS, the TSU football program has 13 Black national championships to its name; and

WHEREAS, George’s businesses include wealth management company he had been focused on in recent months along with playing golf.  Also, an actor, George has appeared on Broadway and TV, stating all that prepared him for this moment; and

WHEREAS, Eddie George, a four-time Pro Bowl running back with the Tennessee Titans and the 1995 Heisman Trophy winner with Ohio State. He was drafted in the first round of the 1996 NFL Draft and played professionally for the Tennessee Titans (both in Tennessee and in Houston when the franchise was known as the Houston Oilers) and Dallas Cowboys; and

WHEREAS, George graduated from Ohio State in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture. He later earned an MBA from Northwestern in 2009; and

WHEREAS, George was also an intricate part of the Gateway to Heritage Project on Jefferson Street. His involvement was historic, and this project was the first of its kind by the Tennessee Department of Transportation; and

WHEREAS, Eddie George is married to Tamara “Taj” George and they have two sons, Eriq and Jaire; and

WHEREAS, George played in the NFL for nine seasons and his career totals include 10,441 rushing yards; 268 receptions, 2,227 receiving yards, and 78 touchdowns (68 rushing and 10 receiving); and

WHEREAS, George was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2011 and the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame in 2013; and

WHEREAS, George stated that, “this is a new Chapter for him. And the No. 1 goal is to win and bring prominence back to the university where it belongs”; and

WHEREAS, TSU carries a rich history; and being a successful coach requires desire, dedication, determination, decisiveness and discipline and Eddie George is the man to get the job done; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognize and congratulate Eddie George as he joins the staff at Tennessee State University (TSU) as head football coach.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as congratulating Eddie George, as the 22nd head football coach at Tennessee State University.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Eddie George and Tennessee State University.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
