WHEREAS, after four decades in Nashville’s journalism industry, Mary Hance, author of the “Ms. Cheap” column, will retire in January 2021; and

WHEREAS, Mary Hance, better known as “Ms. Cheap”, started her career in journalism as a copy clerk at the Nashville Banner in 1976; and

WHEREAS, throughout her 45 years in journalism, Mary Hance worked in many different positions including a courts reporter, cops reporter, an editorial writer, children’s book editor, and an assistant editor; and

WHEREAS, the Ms. Cheap column was created at the Nashville Banner in 1994 when Hance discovered how much her readers enjoyed her articles detailing hospitality, retail, and shopping bargains; and

WHEREAS, after consulting with the editors at the Nashville Banner, the “Ms. Cheap” column was born, and readers have enjoyed getting the scoop on cheap deals and events ever since; and

WHEREAS, after the Nashville Banner closed in 1998, Mary Hance moved to The Tennessean where her column became a reader favorite and developed a cult following; and

WHEREAS, over the years, people eagerly read about Ms. Cheap’s free things to do, best deals, coupons, discounts, and creative ways to save money; and

WHEREAS, Mary Hance inspired readers to take a participatory role in the column by helping with Ms. Cheap’s “Cheapest of the Cheap” contest, her T-shirt drive for the homeless, and the annual Penny Drive for Second Harvest Food Bank, now in its 12th year; and

WHEREAS, through the generosity of Ms. Cheap column readers, the annual Penny Drive raised more than $715,000 during its first 11 years; and

WHEREAS, Mary Hance is a true Tennessee Volunteer, exemplified by her caring and giving spirit, and her presence in Nashville’s journalism community will be greatly missed; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes Mary Hance upon the occasion of her retirement and wishes her the very best in all future endeavors.

 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the retirement of Ms. Cheap columnist Mary Hance.

Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Mary Hance.

Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
