A Resolution recognizing Sarah Fuller as the first female player in a Southeastern Conference and Power Five college football game.

WHEREAS, on November 28, 2020, Sarah Fuller, a senior at Vanderbilt University, made history as the first ever female to play in a Southeastern Conference football game and the first to play in a Power Five football game; and
WHEREAS, Fuller took the field with the Vanderbilt Commodores in their game against the University of Missouri Tigers, kicking off the second half; and
WHEREAS, a unique opportunity presented itself after COVID-19 protocols kept current Vanderbilt kickers from participating in the November 28 game; and
WHEREAS, Fuller was the starting goalkeeper on the 2020 Vanderbilt soccer team, who won the SEC Tournament championship in November; and
WHEREAS, due to continued COVID-19 protocols, Fuller is preparing to play in future games, and has been listed as the lone kicker on the roster against the University of Georgia; and
WHEREAS, on December 12, 2020, Fuller became the first female to score in a Power Five conference game when she kicked an extra point with 1:50 to go in the first quarter during Vanderbilt’s game against rival the University of Tennessee. She kicked another extra point in the fourth quarter; and
WHEREAS, the game against Tennessee ended her history-making football career at Vanderbilt University after the cancellation of what would have been the season closer against the University of Georgia; and
WHEREAS, off the field, Fuller has been a three-time selection to the SEC Academic Honor Roll and has interned with Thistle Farms and End Slavery Tennessee; and
WHEREAS, notably, the back of Sarah Fuller’s helmet featured the words “Play Like A Girl” - a reference to the organization that encourages young women to get involved in athletics and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM); and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council go on record as recognizing Sarah Fuller for her history-making performance during Vanderbilt’s November 28 game against Missouri and wish her continued success in her future endeavors.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. That the Metropolitan County Council hereby goes on record as recognizing Sarah Fuller as the first female player in a Southeastern Conference and Power Five college football game.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Sarah Fuller.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
